Gateway Treasury Systems --- Product Manager Vice President of Development I was Vice President of Software Development for this exclusive company that specializes in in-house banking and treasury cash management systems. I am the lead architect and development manager of this expensive and strategic leading-edge software used in large fortune 500 companies. The design effort in many cases was a joint effort with upper management of many of these large companies. I commuted from Salt Lake City, Utah to Chicago for three years to fulfill this assignment. There was heavy pressure to move to Chicago with this company. I have no desire to leave the Intermountain area permanently. I was hired at Gateway in 2001 to help inject new ideas into this specialty-software company.
During my time as VP of development, we developed several new Electronic Funds Transfer modules for the desktop and web. In addition I designed and managed the development of other new modules including sophisticated General Ledger, Generic Import/Export/Reporting module, Forecasting, and the innovative In-house Banking module which culminated in new software contracts for our modules with GE, Lucent, Hydro-Quebec, TD Waterhouse, Prudential, Daimler Chrysler and others. It also resulted in new partnerships with leading edge financial software providers such as Trema International and Sympro that use these modules in their own financial software products. The weekly commute from Utah to the East was proving to be too burdensome and ineffective and I wished to change the scenario of my employment to be more family-friendly.

Independent Consultant, Bryan Burrell and Associates I worked as consulting software development architect and manager for various large and medium-size organizations including LDS Church, Marketing Ally, and Inkley’s Photo Chain for many modules including G/L, A/P, Purchasing, Inventory, Order Entry, Project Control, and Human Resources with Payroll, Asset Management, Accounts Receivable, Billing, Treasury, Sales and Logistics. This work mostly consisted of developer management, business rules definition, program coding with C/C++ and Outline scripting language, testing, and implementation of the system. I also did much research and work in event driven business processing as well as ‘Stewardship Accounting’ which goes way beyond traditional accounting.
See references below for LDS Church and Inkley’s who were the major clients I consulted for.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) Project Manager and Systems Analyst As Project Manager, I managed a focused full-time employee team of CPA's and programmers which designed, programmed, implemented, and maintained the Church Accounting and Project Control System in 40+ international church accounting offices. This included preliminary training as well as on-going support. This was a mission-critical system that had to be capable of working in many different foreign environments with many different spoken languages and customs. I designed and wrote the core user interface engine in C/C++ that utilized a custom scripting language that I also designed to empower the accountants on my staff to assist in the programming effort. Our team traveled worldwide to all the offices to analyze and install this system. This system was done in late 1980's and was in use about 20 years. This is a particularly difficult project to manage in that it crosses all departmental, authority and cultural lines of the Church organization. This was a major project with a multi-year budget of about 5 million-dollars. Much of this programming was done at home at night and weekends, as there just wasn’t enough time to get it all done in regular working hours. This General Ledger and Cash Management system (Region Ledger System) that was implemented in 1986 remained a critical component in Church International Offices for almost 20 years.

Inkley's Photo and Computer Stores - Controller / IT Director, 7 years I came to Inkley's as dual role controller and IT director and answered to the president of the company. I designed, and custom programmed and implemented a leading edge retail online system for Inkley’s that includes NCR cash register interface (online and batch remote) with integrated AR, Inventory Control, AP, GL, Sales Accounting and Payroll. I managed the design and development of all of these modules. The company grew from 6 stores to 30 plus in the 7 years I was there. Inkley's also became dominant in its niche driving out of business many competitors. Management credited in large part the computerized inventory modeling for this success. I successfully marketed and installed our software to another specialty retailer in Australia (George’s Camera Stores). At Inkley's, I was instrumental in opening the first PC store in Utah, Inkley’s Computer Solutions. I directly managed 20+ FT employees and oversaw as controller some 150 + employees. My computer software was in use for 20 years until a larger national chain company acquired the Inkley’s stores about 1997. I left Inkley’s on good terms because it was a family-owned business and did not have much future for me with the computer programming ideas that I still wanted to do.
